Prerequisites for the AWS Certified DevOps Engineer Professional

There are no prerequisites to sit any AWS exam. However, the AWS Certified DevOps Professional exam is a challenging exam that requires a solid foundation of knowledge of AWS services.

For those who do not have significant experience working with AWS technologies, it is strongly recommended that you first pass the AWS Certified Developer Associate and AWS Certified SysOps Administrator Associate, before attempting the AWS DevOps Professional exam.

The AWS DevOps certification exam will be much easier if you follow this path.

The AWS Certified DevOps Engineer – Professional exam is considered one of the most challenging AWS certifications due to its advanced nature and comprehensive scope.

It requires a deep understanding of DevOps practices, AWS services, and real-world implementation strategies.

What makes it tough:

  • Advanced Level: This is a professional-level certification, so it’s designed for individuals with significant hands-on experience in AWS and DevOps processes. Beginners often find the content overwhelming.
  • Broad Scope: The exam covers a wide range of topics, including CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure as code, monitoring, logging, security, compliance, and disaster recovery.
  • Scenario-Based Questions: Most questions are complex and scenario-based, requiring you to analyze real-world situations and choose the best solutions.
  • Time Pressure: With 75 questions to complete in 180 minutes, time management is crucial, especially for multi-step questions.

While the exam is tough, it’s achievable with thorough preparation and practical experience.

The AWS Certified DevOps Engineer Professional exam is a multiple-choice, multiple-response test. It consists of 75 questions and candidates are allotted 180 minutes to complete the exam.

The exam is designed to measure the candidates’ abilities in areas like continuous delivery, automation, infrastructure as code, monitoring, logging, and security.

The AWS Certified DevOps Engineer – Professional exam has a passing score of 750 out of 1000 points.

Please note:

  • The exam uses a scaled scoring system, meaning your raw score is converted to a consistent scale between 100 and 1000.
  • The exact number of correct answers needed to pass can vary slightly, as AWS weights some questions more heavily than others.
  • While the passing score is fixed at 750, AWS does not disclose the specific percentage or weighting of individual questions.

The exam cost is $300 USD. Please remember that if you’ve passed another AWS certification exam previously (which you should have!) then you will have a 50% discount coupon available in your account over at aws.training.

The AWS Certified DevOps Engineer – Professional certification is valid for three years from the date you earn it.

To maintain your certification beyond the 3 years, you need to pass a recertification exam before it expires.

The learning objectives for the AWS Certified DevOps Engineer – Professional exam are as follows:

  • Continuous Delivery and Automation: Build and manage CI/CD pipelines for efficient deployment.
  • Infrastructure as Code (IaC): Automate infrastructure setup with tools like AWS CloudFormation.
  • Monitoring and Logging: Implement robust monitoring and logging solutions for operational insights.
  • Incident and Event Response: Design automated systems for event handling and disaster recovery.
